Mission Statement

History of Manning Branch
Mabel Manning Branch was dedicated December 10, 1994, replacing a small reading room in Rockwell Gardens Housing Project.
The branch was named after Mabel Manning, a community activist considered by many to be the "mayor" of the Near West Side. Known locally as the "flower lady," she grew flowers in the empty lots around her home and gave them to community residents. Mable Manning was instrumental in the achievement of a 16-point neighborhood revitalization agreement reached by the city, private developers and community residents related to the construction of the United Center sports and exhibition facility. The agreement resulted in the building of the branch library that bears her name.

Cybernavigator
The Manning library has a CyberNavigator. A CyberNavigator is an internet computer tutor. Please feel free to make individual appointments with our CyberNavigator.
The CyberNavigator can help teach basic internet skills, assist in filling out job applications, help set up an email account and much more! Don’t be shy. Please call 312-746-6800 and ask to speak to the CyberNavigator.
Meeting Room
The Manning branch has an attractive meeting room available and encourages a wide variety of community organizations and nonprofits, including condo associations, to use the meeting room free of charge when there are not library programs scheduled.
Meeting room policies are available at the library and you can view them online at http://www.chipublib.org/aboutcpl/cplpolicies/policies/meeting_room.php. Applications for meeting room use are due two weeks prior to the requested date.
Online research
Even when the library is closed, we can help you do your research.
The library subscribes to online reference books, research databases, and newspapers and magazines, many of which can be accessed from a home or office computer with your library card. These sources were carefully chosen for their accuracy. http://www.chipublib.org/cplbooksmovies/research/online_research.php A popular source is Chilton’s Auto Repair Manuals and Learning Express Library which includes practice tests for a such exams as civil service, GED, law enforcement, math etc.
WiFi
The Manning branch, along with all Chicago Public Library locations, has free WiFi available for patrons with laptops.

Programs for Children
The Children’s department at the Manning Branch supports the information literacy needs of the neighborhood’s youth and their families.
In the summer, the Manning Branch participates in the Chicago Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, which encourages children to read and continue learning during the time they are out of school. In addition, the children’s department provides year round programming such as story time for the youngest, and crafts and book discussions for older children. The library works with community schools, parks and childcare centers to form partnerships that promote literacy and love of learning.
