Our programs—After three highly competitive games, Near West Side Community Development Corporation (Near West Side CDC) named three winners of its West Haven Safe Summer Basketball League Championship Tournament, held yesterday at Malcom X College. Crane Future, comprised of Crane Tech High School’s incoming freshmen, Bogan from Bogan High School, and the The Village, hailing from Roosevelt Square, won the elementary, high school and young adult division games, respectively. While the games featured some of the best athletes in the area, the event focused as much on the fairness, courtesy and ethics rewarded through “Sportsmanship” awards, as on the intense competition.

News—The West Haven Sports Club is one of five remaining nominees for the United Airlines Impact Award! We were selected out of more than 55 applicants so this is a great accomplishment. The winner is selected through an online voting process.

News—During these times of economic crisis it has become difficult for people to find employment opportunities. Communities that have high unemployment rate can potentially become gravely damaged and even destroyed. Understanding the severity of this matter, Near West Side CDC (Near West) has made efforts to provide opportunities for West Haven residents to work, learn a trade, and seek further education. Many of these programs have been successful, but the current collaboration with the Put Illinois to Work program has been a success story with many layers unfolded.

Our programs—"OOO Multimedium" & "Near West Side Community Development Corp." bring together 12 kids from a Music class with "After School Matters" at "Crane High School" to write, produce, record and shoot a music video for an uplifting song titled "Make It"! These young men and women prove that counting them out is not an option, by displaying hard work and long hours to pull off an incredible project!

News—“This whole day was a chance of a lifetime”, said Jabril Burpo. Jabril is one of the West Haven’s Giants chosen to be in attendance for the White Sox Community Fund Check Presentation Ceremony held at U.S. Cellular Field on May 3rd. The West Haven Giants were one of the chosen recipients of a baseball grant given by White Sox Charities. “This was nice. It really keeps kids like me motivated and doing something constructive. Kids should appreciate things like this”, said Jabril.
