Yum! Healthy Cooking at the Brown School
Published: January 11, 2012
This winter and spring, youth at the Brown School are learning all about healthy eating! Near West is working with McKinzie Jacobs, a UIC intern, to teach 1st through 5thgrade students how to cook and prepare nutritious meals. As part of our health and wellness programming, McKinzie meets with the students weekly after school. They have already created some wonderful dishes such as fruit kabobs, colorful smoothies, and yummy banana sandwiches!
In December, Purple Asparagus Chefs visited the Brown School for a special cooking event called Delicious Nutritious Adventures: Healthy Happy Holidays. Students created holiday-themed snacks in green and red! One tasty treat was a fruit salad full of red pomegranates and grapes, along with green apples and limes. And, since kids love soda, the Chefs made a healthy alternative with soda water, cranberry juice and fresh-squeezed limes. Delicious!
This January, the Brown students will be right back in the kitchen again. First menu item on the list? Do-it-yourself pizza!
